"The Tower of Lon-geon"

Proud Charlotte Mason mama moment:

When your daughter, during free time, creates a “Tower of Lon-geon” (London + dungeon) out of Lego, complete with 2 hangings and Good Queen Bess locked inside! Also, it is a working candy dispenser!!

High marks for creativity and historical content.

Overheard the same afternoon:

J: Is that Queen Mary?
A: Yes.
J: Are you going to hang her?
A: No. Well, actually yes.
J: Yeah, she's Bloody Mary.
A: Actually I'll put her in the Tower. ... This is Good Queen Bess over here.
...

Why I can't get this kind of detail in required narrations I don't know, but it's heartening to know it's in their brains somewhere! :D

Letters to Arden - February 3, 2018

Dear Arden,
I saw a picture of you yesterday from three years ago. You were dressed in a pink bodysuit, pink tights, pink tutu, and pink slippers, ready for your very first ballet class. If I do the math, you were only four years old. Your smile showed excitement, and just a hint of uncertainty. You were about to step into something new.
Looking back, you seem so small. I remember someone telling me at that age, to step back and remember just how little “four” is. I’m not sure I saw it then. Not sure I could have seen it. You were the firstborn, the big sister, the first to grow into everything. I remember some of the struggles we had. I remember not knowing what to do. I remember feeling small and unsure. Most of the growing pains were mine.
And I’m sorry, little girl, if I handed you some of my burdens. If I put all the expectations for the success of my parenting on your behaviour. If I tried to mould you, like a lump of clay, into some image in my mind’s eye.
I see your four year old face looking back, or is it forward, at me, and my heart melts a little for all the ways I’m sure I failed you. Forgive me daughter, I knew not what I was doing.
And now you are seven, going on eight. You’ve changed your ballet slippers for shoes with metal soles, and you are tapping and stomping your way through the world. I still don’t know what I’m doing. You are still the first, and everything is new for us!
But maybe I can remember how little you are, even now. I pray I can step back and see you for who you are. I pray I can see the smallness, and enjoy it for all that it is.
And maybe I can drop the burden, and stop using you as a measurement of myself. Maybe I can release the muddy hold, and give you to the hands of the skilled Potter. Maybe we can learn together from our Father what it means to grow, yet keep our childlike hearts.
Let’s dance together, little girl. Let me see you smile.
love Mom

Snap Joy :: 1

Have you ever felt it?

The depressive dullness of one day after another? Nothing is going drastically wrong, but nothing seems to be wonderfully right either?

It's a dreariness that seems to drain the life out of you, dribble by dribble.

And it pulls you down and drags you inward, till you are convinced the sun just isn't shining anymore. Not in your world.

Oh, but it is.

And those may be real feelings, those gloomy meanderings of the mind, but they're not the whole truth.

Look up.

If you look for joy, it's there.

I've felt the discouragement, and I'm tired of it. Here's how I'm fighting back. By snapping joy.

That's all. One picture a week of something that brings me joy. I don't even have to create a moment. Just notice one. By faith, believe it is there to be captured.

How do I know it's there? Because of a promise. Two of them actually.

"In Thy presence is fullness of joy."
(Psalm 16:11)

"Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
(Matthew 28:20)

As long as Jesus is with us, joy can be found.

Oh snap.

Let this thought be burned in my mind's eye. Let this thought eclipse the others and forever change the way I look at my world and the people in it.

And, as the poet Hopkins reminds us, "Christ plays in ten thousand places," so joy can be found in the most surprising of ways or ordinary of days.

Snap joy. Simple.

Here is this week's snap:

#1: "Lovely in Limbs Not His"

~~~
Here is the full poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins:
As Kingfishers Catch Fire
As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame;
As tumbled over rim in roundy wells
Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell's
Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name;
Each mortal thing does one thing and the same:
Deals out that being indoors each one dwells;
Selves — goes itself; myself it speaks and spells,
Crying Whát I dó is me: for that I came.
I say móre: the just man justices;
Keeps grace: thát keeps all his goings graces;
Acts in God's eye what in God's eye he is —
Chríst — for Christ plays in ten thousand places,
Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his
To the Father through the features of men's faces.
The Snow Drop by Arden Gallant
This is a poem that Arden wrote earlier this winter. She wanted to share it with you!
The Snow Drop
The snowdrop grows through the snow.
The sunflowers wilt.
The winter is cold.
But Christmas is better,
better than snow.
But the frogs hibernate.
The polar bears stay awake.
But we have a warm house.
Leaves wither.
We eat porridge for dinner.
We have a warm, toasty fireplace.
Geese fly to a warm place.
Everything's cold, cold as ice.
Warm hot chocolate!
It gets darker earlier.
The lights go on in the night.
Everyone goes to bed in their warm, cozy blankets.
You can see the smoke from outside of the house.
Play games.
Sitting by the fire is nice.
Make snow angels, make snowmen, make snow seats.
Warm potatoes in your pockets.
Warm bricks by your feet.
It's nice to have a snuggle.
Wait for friends to play in the snow with you.
Babies first start to walk in the snow.
Go on cozy, warm trains.
Presents by the Christmas tree!
Play in the snow.
Play with dolls, play with soldiers.
The best thing of all is a cozy, warm sleigh to ride in.
Snowflakes fall, so beautiful.
Apples fall to the ground.
A little bit of sun can be nice too.
You can paint inside, go on a sleigh in the snow.
Birds stay and go.
Get ready for Christmas!
Squirrels collect acorns for spring.
Evergreens stay, other trees go.
Leaves fall.
Fall is nice, but winter is better.
Light candles at Advent and sing songs.
Some days it's windy and cold.
Some days it's sunny and nice.
Carving pumpkins is really fun!
Sit with your babies.
Decorate for Christmas.
First Day of School 2016!
We officially started school on Monday! Arden was quite excited to be starting Grade 1.
We got the week off to a good start with a nice mix of activities - harvesting Arden's first yellow pepper from her garden, new colouring books, poetry, money math, an introduction to the orchestra, new paints, and a few good stories.
Highlights of the day were learning the fun poem "Ooey Gooey" (Jack's favourite) and discovering "How the Whale Got His Throat" (Arden's favourite - she did not forget the suspenders, Best Beloved).
Learning About Snow
I have two little "snow scientists" on my hands these days! We've had fun learning all about snow in a variety of ways.
We've read books, made crystals, watched videos on snow (this is where the "snow scientist" idea came from), observed it up close, and, of course, played in it!
Arden made herself a backpack filled with things that snow scientists need - black paper, a magnifying glass, a printout of different snowflake shapes (that I stuck on cardboard and covered with clear tape to waterproof - click here to see what we used), a notebook and a pen, a bottle of water and a snack. She wanted to wear her bike helmet (like the snow cave explorers in the video), but it wouldn't fit over her hat!
These are two of the books we read and enjoyed and learned from:
This one had some beautiful and fascinating up-close photographs of individual snowflakes.
We spent a lot of time just poring over the pictures.
The true story of the first man ever to photograph a snowflake.
Advent Presentation
At the end of our Advent/Christmas season of homeschooling, we put together a little presentation to show Daddy. The kids chose their own "fancy clothes" and were quite pleased to show Daddy what they had learned.
On the program:
Memory Verse: Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)
Poem: "The Christ-Child" by G.K. Chesterton
Songs: "Away in a Manger" & "Joy to the World"
After their little recitations, we got our all the instruments and had a family carol sing together. The kids had a fun time singing, making noise on the drums, harmonicas and whistles, and dancing around. It was a great way to finish off the season!
Stockings!
Pez dispensers!
Dinky train races
Micah's dream come true - fountains of candy!
Dress up clothes!
A toy for the big boy
The queen of Christmas
The Christmas Mailbox
This is something new this year! We made a mailbox that will have a "special delivery" for each of the 12 days of Christmas. On the first day of Christmas there were pears (of course), and a note from "Saint Nicholas's Helpers."
"I saw three ships come sailing in on
Christmas Day in the morning..."
On a sunny, +8 day, what better thing to do than try out our new dory on the river?
Just a little soaker
Dad pulled us back up river!
Yes, we need some proper oars!
We made it safe to shore!
We had Christmas dinner at our friends' home. The kids were too busy playing to pose for pictures!
The menfolk trying to figure out puzzles
Flying the drone
The moms!
Christmas Night - A full moon and candlelight
